Billie Joe Amstrong si Mike Dirnt sunt fondatorii initiali ai trupei Sweet Children, care acum se numeste Green Day. Cei doi s-au cunosctut in 1982 in cantina scolii Sweet High Schoo din Crockett, California. In 1987 Billie Joe si Mike au recrutat un tobosar John Kriftmeyer si au format trupa Sweet Children.
Au cantat pentru prima data la Rod's Hickory Pit. Albumul oficial ca Green Day s-a intitulat "1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours" si a fost lansat in 1990. In 1991 Kriftmeyer a plecat din trupa pt a-si termina studiila si a venit Gilman Street.
Au avut mare succes cu albumele "Dookie", "Insomniac", "Nimrod" si mai recent "American Idiot"
